Wire Sculpture | Artistic Conventions

[Gibbs Farm Sculpture Park]
Here in Aotearoa New Zealand we are super lucky to have the world-renowed Gibbs Farm Sculpture Park. It hosts some of the most beautiful, large scale sculptures in the world. What's even more awesome is that it opens to the public once a year for free. For educators it is such a wonderful field trip to expose learners to the realms of art, geography, and social science. Sculpture is an excellent medium to engage learners of all ages. As a trained painter I am fascinated by the concept of 'drawing in space,' and I see wire sculpture as the perfect marriage between painting and sculpture.

[Sylvie Huang, 2008]
Naturally the sculptural work that I involve in is perhaps seen as more 'feminine' with the qualities of being soft, responsive, and focusing on connectivity - although I still see it deeply rooted in the practice of peinture.
Wire sculpture introduction

The presentation is acommpanied by a booklet that students can capture information and make notes on while following the presentation. Download it here as a PDF.

Realistically the presentation should take about 30 minutes, making sure that learners fill in the required information on the artists and art terms. Students shall take another 20-30 minutes initiating and developing their ideas towards their wire sculpture.

This lesson is specifically designed to inspire excellence so that learners know what is possible.
